Actor David Ogden Stiers has passed away at the age of 75 on Saturday, March 3, 2018, due to bladder cancer. The veteran actor was probably best known to general audiences as Major Charles Emerson Winchester III on the classic TV series M*A*S*H, the arrogant surgeon from Boston who sparred perpetually with Alan Alda’s Hawkeye. Born in Peoria, Illinois, Mr. Stiers earliest acting work was in the early 1970’s on stage, film, and television.
Mr. Stiers’ resonant voice actually earned him his first on-screen credit as the announcer in George Lucas’ dystopian film THX 1138. His first major voiceover role in animation was as the fussy clock Cogsworth in 1991’s Beauty and the Beast, which was only the first in many roles for Disney. In addition to reprising Cogsworth in numerous follow-up projects, Mr. Stiers also played Governor Ratcliffe and Wiggins in Pocahontas, the Archdeacon in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Dr. Jumba in Lilo & Stitch and its follow-ups, Mr. Jolly in Teacher’s Pet, and the narrator in several Winnie-the-Pooh films. Other voiceover roles included Solovar in the Justice League/Justice League Unlimited series and Mr. Maellard in Cartoon Network’s Regular Show.
